The recent passing of North native Eartha Kitt stirred some memories of my mother's stories of her early life in the town. When I was a child, I didn't know who Eartha Kitt was, but my late mother, Diana Witt Williams, daughter of Essie and Celia Charley Witt, did. She regaled me with stories of how Kitt forged a life for herself from humble beginnings. It was proof positive that the town, despite its limitations then, gave birth to big dreams and great people.
